Correct. I use Adobe Audition; have done for many years....the crush album, the infamous "A2D" as first featured on the golden artifact....Yhaal House etc..etc...blah blah...were done with that.
Unless the operating system of any DAW (digital audio workstation) you have access to allows reverse of the recorded file, then as you say, the only way is to export as .wav, import into Audition (or SoundForge or Wavelab or Protools the list is endless....you could even use "Audacity" a FREE software application that has now grown all kinds of bells & whisles since its inception), "reverse" the file, and re-import back to ya DAW.

When is a DAW not a DAW?
When its a 5 1/4" reel of Sony tape

What do you do when a drummer knocks at your DAW?
Nothing...they never know when to come in anyway
