I'm new here (actually this is the first time I've been brave enough to do this anywhere), but when I first went to my counselor he also suggested keeping a journal...and over time it's helped me immensely. Very few people know about my childhood abuse when I was growing up, and given the mask my parents wore in public (especially my father), many people would never believe the truth beneath it all...so writing in my journal has been an immense outlet for getting the bad stuff out of my system.
When I first began writing, my counselor suggested "...write it down and then burn the paper..."; helps with closure and moving on. I haven't burned any of my journal pages, but writing has certainly helped me heal and move forward with my life now. I'm so grateful.
And I really enjoyed your poem; inspiring.
