My husband's great-grandfather was Angus Stewart who spoke for the locals at the hearing after the Battle of the Braes. Apparently he spoke English whereas most of the residents only spoke the Gaelic. A scene depicting Angus speaking in the courtroom was in a local museum when we last travelled there a few years ago. Angus Stewart was the proprietor of a shop in Portree and one of his daughters, Donaldina, emigrated to Canada, married Sam Henderson and settled in Alberta. The family cottage on Skye still stands and was inhabited by a modern Scottish poet who died a few years ago. I don't know who currently lives there.
