ANOTHER TWITTER QUESTION.......help the dummy!!!

Ok, I am following 5 people.
If I want to send a message to 1 of those people, will all of them get it?

Or, do they have to be following me before they see what I post?

I dont know how to post to one person so that the other 4 dont get the message.
