Its a little F2 dohne ewe. She seems to be coming along ok, but its early days yet. All are lambing at the same time and over 1000 lambs are due so we will have a few poddies, i would say! Even in a good year you can expect that. Its just nature....not all animals are good mums and not all babies are meant to survive.
Hubby picked up another babe tonight...he checked it just before dark because the mums should be back with their bubs by then and this one was still alone. (there are a lot of maiden ewes in this paddock) That makes four poddies for now. I think only one has had the opportunity to get any colostrum so i take each day as it comes and try not to get too upset if we lose any.
We did make one mistake. We have been spray marking the lambs left alone and coming back to check on them later to see if they have found mum. One little mite had found his way back to the mob and we ummmed and arred over whether to leave him or not. We decided to leave him because we hate to take a lamb that may still have a mum looking after him. Found him dead under a tree this afternoon. Sometimes its hard to know the best thing to do for them and this time it wasnt. Not a nice feeling.
Probably about 12 months ago some one posted on this board that crows DONT KILL LAMBS! They only attack the dead and dieing ones. She got this piece of information from some scientists who sat out in a paddock with some sheep and crows for a few weeks and came to the conclusion that crows dont have a big impact on lambing. I wish they were here now to see what the crows have done to this healthy and very much alive lamb. I actually dont mind crows, i admire their intelligence, but i know what damage they can inflict.
