I agree with Richard. It helps a lot, I have a wooden Strider with daggerboards, and have put a big rig on her. Sails great, though flatteting en reefing has to be done earlier. Look at the pics at the link url
My mast is 10.10 mtr high so added more then 10 m2 on the upwind rig (plus big spi, gennaker and screatcher. Done 23 knts (scary but feasable with potent crew)
