DEDICATED TO DOWN SYNDROME

SAVE HEADSTART NURSERY.

My son attends Headstart Nursery Margate Kent for children with moderate learning difficulties. I was informed on the 19th June 2007 of the closure of our nursery at the end of this term literally weeks away. I am alarmed at the news and the short notice and timing of such a closure and the impact it will have on the children attending the nursery.

The nursery helps children with a smooth transition into mainstream education through its vital early intervention structure. By facilitating our children with the essential basics such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, routines, coping strategies e.g, 'fitting into a larger classroom' confidence building and loads more even help with the basics such as toileting and feeding. Which my son needs he has Down Syndrome, there's no replacement set in place, surely this is a travesty, how are the mainstream nursery school teachers also expected to cope. I am still in shock at the moment as it changes the whole outlook of my sons future, we thought he would have that smooth transition into mainstream education, now without a doubt he will struggle. I dread the outcome, there has been talk of disruption in the classroom due to his frustration caused by not having Headstarts support, early intervention should be for all children with learning difficulties. How are we the parents and our children, expected to cope without this support it could create all sorts of difficulties. Headstart should remain!

"The need for Headstart is justified by the need to have specialist staff. All of the training in the book will have no effect if the person teaching lacks the extra qualities of understanding and persistence that are so often required. The ability to build a successful rapport does not come easily to all teachers, and those who elect to undertake this role are far more likely to succeed than those who are forced to undertake the task, albeit that they are given the extra training. This is a role where experience and dedication counts, neither of these can be acquired at training college. "(CHOICE FORUM BY CHARLES HENLEY.)

We the parents should of been consulted and asked our opinions, Kent County Council should not be able to just shut down Headstart with no replacement, its impossible to replace Headstarts setting in a mainstream environment. Surely this goes against every principle of the VALUING PEOPLE ETHOS and promotes social exclusion rather than inclusion. We are being left in limbo so please help to STOP THE CLOSURE OF HEADSTART by signing the petition. Just click the HEADSTART PETITION link below to enter. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/SAVEHEADSTART/

SPREAD THE WORD YOUR SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED.(The petitions circulating Thanet are receiving a very supportive response from the public). We are not a lynch mob, we are pro-active parents who want answers and our nursery back. No matter how long it takes, this campaign is ongoing and regular updates will be given.

Leyland Gap's Specialist Nursery is being closed down too, they have kindly offered valuable advice and the service of their schools educational legal advisor, for parents affected by closesures. Please sign Leyland Gaps Nursery petition just click this link. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Pre-School/

Hi

Will do! We are in a battle in Manchester to stop conversion of a Chidlren's Centre into a privately-run one with a Sure Start label (soft privatisation) along with closures of nursery schools- we have not been consulted. We have had public meetings and are gathering momentum. We have had support from the NUT. We also have support from the National Campaign for real nursery Education - please contact this excelletn national group who can help you stop the closure via Ombudsman.
