LST.404 was built in the USA at Bethlehem-Fairfield Company, Baltimore and commissioned by the RN in the USA on 15 December 1942; after trials, she sailed from Norfolk, Virginia on 9 April 1943 for Bermuda and then Gibraltar, destined to join the 2nd LST Flotilla in the Mediterranean. I am not certain when they arrived, but passage in an LST was a slow and hard task. I would suggest that on 23 April they would have been in mid-Atlantic, still on passage.
Typically, after leaving Norfolk, an LST would take 4-5 days to reach Bermuda and after waiting for another few days would then make the 3,500 mile trip to Gib, which would take another 18 - 20 days. Being essentially flat bottomed, with no bilge keels they rolled badly, and the constant battering meant that they suffered from regular minor breakdowns in equipment. The weather was also poor. For example LST.418, who also made the crossing in mid-April 1943, reported that the the ship rolled heavily in force 7 to 8 gales, with rough seas and a high following swell making her pitch into the sea "we were constantly wet through rain and sea spray".
With the weather being so bad, and the conditions marginal, I would suspect that your relative, along with the other three, may have been washed overboard and lost. The LST was a slow lumbering beast, and could not have turned round quickly to assist anyone in the water.
