Stephen

Trying to identify an officer with no other info apart the fact that he came from Kirkcudbright is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack ...

I can find only three officers that can definately be tied to Kirkcudbright as a place of birth - but there were probably more who may have resided there at some stage.

John Campbell (1719 - 1790)was born at Kirkbean; he died a Rear Admiral at his London residence

John Richard Delap Halliday (1772-1837) was born at Castlemaine; he died a Vice Admiral in London

James Murray Gordon (1782 - 1850) seems to have been born in the region; he married a woman from Kilmore and after his effective retirement in 1810 as a Captain, he resided at Balmaghie where he died, a retired Rear Admiral, in 1850
