There has been no "HMS Staffordshire".

There was a large passenger/cargo ship of the name which was owned by the Bibby Line of Liverpool.

She was used as a troopship from 1940 - I can find no incident involving her in March 1940 - according to convoy records she sailed Gibraltar 25 March in convoy HGF.24F arriving at Liverpool 3 April....

In May 1941 she was attacked by an aircraft and badly damaged - could this be the incident referred to?

see: http://www.red-duster.co.uk/BIBBY13.htm

- you will have to scroll down the page to get to Staffordshire, but it does give some details
