HMS Excellent

My grandfather served at HMS Excellent during WW2 but his naval record also says HMS Excellent II (Evolution). Now I know that HMS Excellent is the gunnery and training school near Portsmouth but does anyone know what the Excellent II (Evolution) bit was? I'm curious because he got a mention in despatched whilst there which seems strange from a shore-based situation.
