On the 19th April 1949 amethyst was making passage up the Yangtse river when she came under fire, twenty two British sailors where killed. HMS Consort and HMS Blackswan tried to help her after going aground, but failed after they where also hit by the chinese communist artillery. Amethyst eventualy made a daring run for it under darkness and escaped. This bacame known as the YANGTSE INCIDENT. How many of the crew from Amythyst, Consort, Blackswan are still alive and how are they remembered also have you thought about a reunion for them. I was only Five at the time it happened but stuck in my mind.
