It may be a reference to the expedition to Bouvet Island by HMS MILFORD in February 1934. The voyage was marked by strong gales and high seas, but the ship is recorded as anchoring off the island, which was covered in snow, amidst icebergs and being surrounded by penguins and seabirds.
