: I'm trying to find out any information regarding my
great uncle Sub-Lieutenant COLIN WILLIAM HORNER HASLETT
(RNVR) who was killed 19th August 1942 during the
Dieppe Raid.
: I have letters from LT D T Bibby and G T Lambert
which were sent to my Great Grand Mother from a German
POW camp in 1943. GT Lambert was with Colin when he
was killed - he dosEnt give any details as to what they
were doing when he was killed. lt Bibby was a close
friend who server with Colin on a drifter.
: I have recieved information from Paul De La Motte-
Harrison and Tony Chapman which leads me to believe
that Colin was in command of a Landing craft during the
Raid.
: I would greatly appreciate any further information or
guidance.
: Many Thanks
: Darren
Hi Darren it would appear that Sub-Lieutenant Haslett
was either on the staff of the Vice Admiral Combined
Training at HMS QUEBEC II (not HMS QUEBEC), Inveraray
or that he was attached for other reasons to that unit.
There is no connection in the casualty records to link
to any particular landing craft lost during that
operation but that does not necessarily rule out the
possibility he was in command of one of these vessels
however if on the Admiral's staff it may be that he was
engaged in beach control duties and that he was killed on a
landing craft approaching the beach. Whatever the
circumstances his body was not
recovered, suggesting he may have been lost at sea rather
than on shore, and his name is commemorated on the
Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
