Debs,
Was it Mr Stubbs who did this surgery? ( There are several surgeons in NZ capable of this surgery now all trained overseas).I had my main bile duct excised 18 years ago and replaced with piece of intestine, it was done by Mr Stubbs, the first person in the world to discove this procedure was a japanese surgeon in 1958. The full name of the surgey is Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy . I hope he explained to you that it means you will be more subject to cholangitis in the future due to the bugs that live in the intestine normally. I ad 4 clear years of no cholangitis before it started for me though of course I had been having cholangitis since birth due to the choledochal cyst I was born with. Is he saying that they used this surgery on the two people he spoke of who had problems with the bile duct like you where as prevously they hae only used it for people ike me or people who have narrowing problems with their bile dut after having their gallbladder out for example.
I had a HIDa scan a few weeks ago and ate the chocolate bar etc and it showed my loop of intestine tat replaces the main bile duct is having problems withbile back up, biliary gastric reflux and of course the narrowing of the hepatic duct which is causing my severe pain everyday for the last 15 years Rememeber I went to Auckland for revision of my hepticojejunostomy where Proff Munn split two of the hepatic ducts that had narrowed off (stricture of hepaticojejunostomy with PTC dilation), but unfortuately I was still in pain I guess due to the third duct starting to narrow inside--at that stage it wouldn't have shown up with the a PTC scan.
This is the first time I have ever been given a HIDA scan which makes me quiet angry if they have a HIDA scan in NZ now.
All of thetop surgeons and medical docs have done their study in either Britain or USA as they are the two best countries to study advanced medicine. When I had the hepaticojejunostomy I had waited all of my adult life for a surgeon trained in this to move back to NZ which is why my family movedto he Uk when I was 21 t hough MR Stubbs says we went to the wrong hospital, he moved back to NZ when I was 32. The surgery I did have age 21 did allow the bile toget through and stopped the cirrhosis I had than from killing me---MR Stubbs could find no sign of cirrhosis when he operated age 32.
Mr Stubbs said o me that if he couldnot do my hepaticojejunostomy there was only one person in the world who could operate and that was his boss. He also saidhe was going to write me up in the Lanscet because my cirrhosis had disappeared which was unheard of , it is still very rare for cirrhosis to reverse itself. IF it is Mr Stubbs that did your op he is known for his 'big' remarks, years ago I spoke to a doctor who went to medical school with him and he has always been like that--though I'mtold surgeons have big egos it comes with the terrioraty doing the amazing thingsthey do.
I'm really glad your well Debs and I'm glad thy finally found the reason for your pain after all these years.
