Got an update on Deb Hegeman's (who passed away a few years back), Bubbles & Sake. We send MAARS, annual donations as they have done such a great job at taking care of DebH's 2 birds which she loved so much.
Here is the update. MAARS has not adopted them out and they have kept them together for the last 3 yrs, so for those that remember DebH, here is the update on Bubbles & Sake:

Sake and Bubbles are doing great. Since we have moved to our new home they are in a smaller room with only compatible companions which means they are able to be out more to socialize during the shifts. This was the goal in the new location and we have been able to make it work.

For most people if Sake likes you, Bubbles does not and if Bubbles likes you, Sake does not. It is very funny. I did find, however, when they were at my house that after a while Bubbles came around.

They are both great eaters and really love the fresh food we provide including pasta, fruit, grains and vegetables.

Both Sake and Bubbles enjoy exploring and eating the shelter and are known for their ability to chew walls and wood!

They spend a lot of time snuggling and one of my favorite sites is when Bubbles puts his wing over Sake and they preen each other.

They have a few favorite toys especially anything that is easily chewable – less wood and more material.

Both step up well and go home nicely when it is time. Sake still really likes his baths and still prefers to dunk himself so we will often set up a dish for him so he can have a swim. I think he mostly likes it because it makes us laugh but either way we indulge him as much as possible.

They have not made any other close friends but they also get along with everyone in their room which is nice. I have seen Bubbles venture into a neighboring Sun Conure’s cage and the Sun Conure, Felix, venture into his cage but usually when the owner is not at home and mostly to eat each other’s food!

The move to our new shelter has been much bigger than we ever imagined and we have spent most of the past year renovating, repairing, and trying to settle in (the birds have been settled since day one but the we’re still working on the humans!).

This has not been the easiest year for MAARS and each member of the leadership team has faced personal issues which took our attention away from MAARS business (like newsletters) but never the flock. We are hoping to be able to refocus ourselves in the new year to continue to build the organization but we know that purchasing the building is a huge step forward in securing the future for the flock.

As always, we really appreciate your support. I will see Sake and Bubbles tomorrow and will let them know their “aunts” are thinking of them!

Thanks, Jamie
