September Energies: Dreams,Intuition and the Inner Life

September is one of the warmest months in the Southern United States. Northern states have warm September days, but the nights get much cooler. It is also harvest time for crops.

The autumn equinox, on September 22, means that summer is truly over as the Sun begins its journey into winter. The significance of this is that every point on Earth will, for one day, experience 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of daylight. The long nights will soon be with us and so, for many, will the winter blues.

At the South Pole, the penguins will be celebrating the first appearance of the sun in six months. By the same token, at the North Pole the polar bears will be bracing themselves for six months of darkness.

According to the Georgian calendar, September is the ninth month. However, on the Roman calendar, it was the seventh month. In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh."

Numerologically, September as the ninth month is the completion of a cycle. With the number 9, it is time to finish, end, complete and to let go of all that hinders our progress.

Think of this month as a much needed cleansing or purifying period. Unburden yourself and clear the path for the new cycle just around the corner.

There is no need to seek outside counsel; our intuition is heightened at this time. Look inside your mind and soul and cast off any bonds that keep you from experiencing whatever is most important to you. Prepare yourself to be able to step out with new and fresh determination next month. In effect, this month will bring both the end of the old and the beginning of the new.

Astrologically, September begins with the sun in the sign of Virgo (I Analyze) and ends in the sign of Libra (I Balance).

Mercury rules Virgo, and Virgo is tied to Hermes, child of the Gods, and Teacher of the ancient Wisdom. Hermes, giver of the Arts of Wisdom, teacher of humankind, Master of the Mind, Father of Medicine, The Great Communicator. All these attributes rule the people born within the influence of Virgo. Mercury tells us all to "Look! Truth is everywhere." All of nature around us, everything we find is shot through with the Wisdom of creation and it is only for us to look, and listen, and as a result from all that is will we know, and that is Wisdom.

As we observe the Wisdom which surrounds us, we can also hear Mercury’s command which is: "Discriminate and analyze" -- virtues of the Virgo, for this tells us that if we take apart and analyze what we see and hear and feel, the anatomy of Wisdom will reveal itself to us, and thus knowing -- Wisdom will be ours.

The relationship between the ability to discriminate and the capacity to live wisely is brought forth most clearly in the Message of Virgo: Determine thy path with care, that you may follow the steep, narrow, and unused trail to perfection, but not the broad pleasant ways of the mortal world. Discriminate and analyze, for only thus can you determine the path of Wisdom.

The Key Word for Virgo is "Service" and serve they do. We can do well to watch a Virgonian, if we know one, for a while, and let their behavior show us how to serve one another.
