I loved 'ONE SUMMER' and would like to love it again but there seems to be one unmoving,relentless stumbling block preventing that..WILLY RUSSELL!
It would be great to get peoples oppinions on Willy's continuing decision to block the release or re-showing of 'ONE SUMMER'.
I know most people here,if not all,are in favour of a DVD/Video release or possibly a re-airing of the show but what about Willy himself? What are your views? Do you think he's a miserable old sod or can you see his reasoning behind not giving the program the nod?
All we realy know for sure is that Willy wrote the play with someone else in mind to play the two central charachters of Billy and Icky and that he didn't like the directors finished product.
But is a fall out with the director realy a good enough reason to stop the general public from seeing this great program again,or owning it..or even letting a new generation get a look at what was a fantastic piece of writing and an incredible eighties drama?
What i do know is that i wrote a guestbook piece for Willy Russells official site in which i criticised Willy's reasoning behind him seemingly washing his hands of 'ONE SUMMER' and stubbornly preventing any future release but..it wasn't put up.
I was pretty bold with my views on what i thought of Willy's reasoning but never disrespectful.I told how much people loved the show and would be thrilled if he could buried the hatchet with all that jaded directory arguing and artistic difference nonsense,after all it's been a long time passing..but my submittance was ignored.
Later i also wrote a glitering apraisal of Willy to prove a point..it went straight up!
Do you agree,as i do that Willy Russell has lost the plot? Once a great man who wrote for and championed the everyman. Now,well i think Willy has become enthralled in his own ego.I realy do!
So..Willy Russell,the working man's poet or an ego-driven old fake?! Am i being too harsh? Maybe there is more to the snubbing of 'ONE SUMMER'? Please use this post to reply with your views on this subject.
