The picture was always grainy,that was intentional.It has nothing to do with poor transfers or lack of restoration for dvd.It had that grainy quality when it was originally broadcast.For instance,the lighting is dark in many of the interior scenes,this was intentional.Many filmed (as opposed to videotaped) tv series have this "grainy" look,"Fox" springs to mind.
