Devril, once again, you are right on point here. Your posts are very engaging, interesting and thought provoking.
On June 14, 1920 Francis Cecil Sumner became the first African American to be awarded a Ph.D. degree in psychology. He then became a university professor. Dr. Sumner was described by his students as low keyed, quiet and very unassuming. Yet, he resolutely used his intellectual resources to serve his community. Throughout his career, Dr. Sumner maintained an unwavering interest in African Americans issues, developing on what is now know as Black Psychology. One of his students was Dr. Kenneth Clark. In the 1940’s, a landmark experiment was conducted by the husband and wife team of Dr. Kenneth Clark and Dr. Mamie Clark. The results showed that black children picked white dolls over black ones. Seventy years later, enter a typical store in a black neighbourhood, what do you see? Bleach to make skin lighter and chemicals to make hair straighter! What does it say? 500 years of humiliating oppression has implanted a belief system that makes us view African features as inferior.
This is a crippling problem. How do we tackle it?
